Removal of atheromas, lipomas, fibromas

The skin is an organ in which developmental abnormalities or benign nodules often occur. The most frequently diagnosed changes include atheromas, lipomas and fibromas. They are not dangerous, but may cause psychological discomfort or discomfort associated with rubbing against clothes. When changes occur in exposed places, e.g. on the face, many people wonder how to remove atheroma or fibroma. Due to the fact that the skin may also develop malignant lesions, it is advisable that each lump be examined by a dermatologist or general surgeon. The doctor will confirm its benign nature, and if the lesion is an aesthetic problem, methods for its removal will be proposed.

Removal of atheromas, lipomas and fibromas is a simple surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia. Excision of the lesion takes about 15-20 minutes and is painless for the patient. There is no need for subsequent hospitalization. Surgical removal allows you to get rid of problems with unsightly nodules on the skin for a long time.

What does a atheroma look like?

A cyst is a stagnant cyst in the area of the hair follicle, usually caused by a blockage of the sebaceous gland. Kaszak is visible as a several millimeter nodule with a yellowish color. If left untreated, it becomes more and more filled with sebaceous mass, epidermal cells and particles of hair follicles - sometimes its size increases to a few or several centimeters. The process of growing atheroma lasts for months. Coughs often appear in adolescents during adolescence, when the level of sex hormones that stimulate the work of the sebaceous glands increases. They can also occur in middle-aged people. Coughs are usually located on the scalp, behind the ear, on the nape of the neck, on the back and in the area of the external genitalia (scrotum or labia). They are less common on the skin around the eyes and on the eyelids. The tendency to develop atheromas may be genetically determined and then it is caused by improper organization of skin cells during fetal development. A baby may be born with a atheroma, for example on the back or neck. Kaszak is a benign lesion that is usually a cosmetic problem. Sometimes, however, the atheroma may become superinfected and local inflammation develops. The kashak may crack and odorous discharge may emerge from its interior. Therefore, it is worth removing the lesion before its size increases, skin infection and unpleasant complications occur.

What does a lipoma look like?

A lipoma is a benign lesion made of fat cells located within the subcutaneous tissue. The skin above the lipomas is normal in color. Lipomas can be palpated - they are usually soft and elastic to the touch, they can be easily moved in relation to adjacent tissues. The lesion usually grows very slowly and is rarely painful, unless the lipoma becomes very large and begins to conflict with another structure, such as a nerve. Lipomas can appear anywhere on the body, but the most common areas are the thighs, arms, abdomen and hips. The change may be single or multiple. Lipomas develop at any age, although they are more often diagnosed in adults.

What does a fibroma look like?

Fibromas are benign lesions originating in connective tissue. Fibromas can be in the form of soft or hard nodules well demarcated from the rest of the skin. Soft fibromas have a flesh-colored color, are raised above the surface of the skin, and may hang baggy. They occur mainly in the face, neck, neckline, armpits and groin area. Hard fibromas are more often located on the extremities and appear as hard nodules. The changes are usually painless, they are mainly a cosmetic defect.

Indications for the surgical removal of atheroma, lipoma, fibroma

Kaszak - when to remove?

Removal of atheromas is mainly done for aesthetic reasons. Doctors recommend removing the atheroma also in a situation where the atheroma becomes large or when it becomes chronically irritated or oppressed. Damage to the skin over the atheroma threatens with infection and even the formation of an abscess. To prevent this from happening, it is better to remove the atheroma when it is still small.

Removal of a lipoma - when is it indicated?

Lipomas are removed when they sit on exposed parts of the body and are considered unsightly by the patient. The second indication is the pressure of the lipoma on a blood vessel or nerve. The lipoma is then removed to decompress the compressed structure. It is worth emphasizing that each lipoma-like change noticed by us should be checked by a doctor. Another type of tumor with similar characteristics is a malignant liposarcoma tumor. It extends slightly deeper than the lipoma and infiltrates the surrounding tissues (the lipoma is always surrounded by a capsule). In order to initially check whether the lesion is benign or has atypical features, the doctor performs an ultrasound examination.

Indications for the removal of fibromas

As in the case of atheromas, fibromas are removed mainly for aesthetic reasons - especially if they are present on the face, they are dark and cause mental discomfort.

Cough, lipoma, fibroma - how to get rid of them?

Surgical excision of the lesion is the most effective method. In most cases, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis. Excision of atheroma, lipoma or fibroma is performed under local anesthesia, therefore it is completely painless.

Surgical removal of the atheroma

The procedure consists of a several-centimeter skin incision (usually 2-3 cm) in the area of the atheroma. Then the content of the atheroma is drained with thorough cleaning of the tissues. In order for the atheroma not to recur, it is necessary to thoroughly remove the entire cyst and its walls. When an atheroma is infected, it is first necessary to treat the inflammation. The doctor may inject a steroid with a strong anti-inflammatory effect into the atheroma. The atheroma removal procedure is performed after about 4 weeks.

Surgical removal of the lipoma

The extent of the incision may depend on the size of the lipoma to be removed - usually it does not exceed a few centimeters. Sometimes it is necessary to incision deeper tissues - e.g. fascia. General anesthesia may be required when the lipoma is located in the trunk, is extensive and penetrates deeply.

Surgical removal of fibromas

Excision of fibromas is a simple procedure. The surgeon makes millimeter incisions so wounds heal quickly and scarring is minimal.

How to proceed after the procedure?

On the 7-10th day after the procedure, visit a doctor to check the wound healing and remove any sutures. Protect the wound with a dressing until the wound heals. Make-up is not allowed in this area, as this could lead to infection and prolong the healing process. After removing the stitches, the forming scar should be subjected to a massage or other treatments improving the reconstruction of the connective tissue. This will make the scar less visible. Make-up can be applied after the wound has fully healed.

Frequently asked questions about the removal of atheromas, lipomas, fibromas:

Do I have to stay in the hospital after the atheroma or lipoma surgery?

Removal of atheromas or lipomas is a minimally invasive procedure. Small-sized cysts or lipomas may be excised under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis. After the small wound has been secured with stitches and a dressing, the patient can go home. In very rare cases, it is necessary to use general anesthesia (large dimensions and difficult localization of the lesion, multiple lesions). After waking up from general anesthesia, the patient must remain in the hospital for at least one day for observation.

Will there be any scars on the face after resection of fibromas?

Surgical removal of the fibroma is associated with the disruption of the skin, so after the procedure, scar formation should be taken into account. However, it is very small and will remain less visible if it undergoes regular massage after removing the stitches.

How to remove atheroma at home?

For small, several-millimeter atoms, you can use an astringent compress made of horsetail leaf infusion. This will reduce the secretion of sebum and facilitate the absorption of the atheroma. However, if this does not help or the atheroma is more than 5 mm, a dermatologist or surgeon should be consulted. The doctor will evaluate the change - whether it is a benign nodule. When the atheroma is an aesthetic problem, it is surgically excised. The atheroma removal procedure is painless and safe, so you shouldn't be afraid of it.
