Foot ultrasound

The foot plays an important role in maintaining a standing position and absorbing loads while walking and running. Ultrasound examination of the foot enables the assessment of inflammatory and degenerative changes, the symptoms of which may make walking difficult. The ultrasound of the foot also allows for the diagnosis of soft tissue damage in this area - ligaments, tendons, muscles, tendons, nerves and vessels.

What diseases and injuries can be diagnosed by ultrasound of the foot?

Heel pain:

Plantar fasciitis (colloquially "heel spur"),

Heel fat pad atrophy,

Achilles tendinopathy at its attachment (the so-called insertional tendinopathy),

Lumps on the sole of the foot (may be painless):

Ledderhose disease (plantar fascia fibromatosis),

Other neoplastic changes (MRI of the foot indicated),

Front Sole Pain:

Damage to the plantar plate, instability of the metatarsophalangeal joint (most often II-III),

Bursitis between the metatarsal bones,

Morton's neuroma - accompanied by numbness of the toes (not always the ultrasound image is unambiguous, sometimes MRI of the forefoot is necessary)

metatarsal fatigue fractures

Toe joint pain

Arthritis, e.g. in the course of rheumatoid arthritis, gout,

Damage to the plantar plate of the first metatarsophalangeal joint (turf toe),

Back pain of the foot:

Inflammation of the tendon sheaths of the extensor muscle of the fingers or big toe,

Metatarsal ligament injuries,

The presence of gelatinous cysts (ganglions),

Side pain in the foot:

Fibula hypertrophy - irritation of the tendons of the fibula muscles,

Additional sagittal ankle syndrome,

Pain on the medial side of the foot:

The presence of an additional nave ankle.

Sonosurgery in the foot area

Examples of sonosurgery on the foot include:

  • Percutaneous blockade of Morton's neuroma,
  • Giving of a steroid to the inflamed interosseous bursa of the forefoot,
  • Puncture or injection of the drug into the Chopart joint, Lisfranca (treatment of degenerative or inflammatory pain in the joints),
  • Giving of a steroid into the plantar fascia (administration of a steroid agent is the last resort in the event of severe persistent symptoms in the course of plantar fasciitis and the lack of effects of other treatments).

At the Dworska Hospital in Krakow, we perform ultrasound examinations of the ankle joint and foot using modern USG 4D and 3D General Electric® ultrasound machines of the Voluson® series.
