Finger ultrasound

The finger ultrasound may be part of the hand ultrasound or be a separate ultrasound. Within each finger, the doctor assesses:

  • ligaments of carpal-metacarpal joints, proximal interphalangeal and distal interphalangeal ligaments,
  • tendons of the muscles that straighten and flex the finger,
  • extensor and flexor straps,
  • the muscles of the withers of the thumb and the ball of the little finger.

What pathologies can be diagnosed during ultrasound of the finger of the hand?

Degeneration of the carpal-metacarpal joint of the thumb

Degeneration of the carpal-metacarpal joint of the thumb is manifested by pain at the base of the thumb that may radiate to the withers of the thumb. The ailments intensify when grasping and performing manipulative movements with the hand involving the thumb. In the process of degeneration, the joint cartilage is gradually destroyed. The risk factors causing the acceleration of degenerative changes are flaccidity of the capsulo-ligamentous apparatus, previous thumb injuries and rheumatoid arthritis.

Ultrasound examination of the thumb carpal-metacarpal joint allows to visualize the inflammatory exudate in the joint cavity, thickening of the capsulo-ligament apparatus and the presence of osteophytes at the edges of the articular surfaces. Ultrasound can distinguish degeneration of the thumb joint from de Quervain's disease (symptoms are similar in both diseases).

Toe tendon injuries

Injuries to the extensor tendons of the fingers can lead to distortions:

Buttonhole toe - excessive flexion in the proximal interphalangeal joint and hyperextension in the distal interphalangeal joint,

Cervical finger - flexion in the distal interphalangeal joint and hyperextension in the proximal interphalangeal joint,

Boxing ankle - pain and swelling of the metacarpophalangeal joint and restriction of the finger straightening movement.

Finger deformities are common in people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In the course of RA, tendons can be damaged, among others as a result of friction against sharp edges of articular surfaces (read more about finger deformities in RA). A tendon rupture can also occur as a result of an injury, e.g. by cutting a finger with a sharp object (read more in the article Injuries of the finger of the hand.

The finger ultrasound allows you to assess the location and degree of tendon damage. In the event of a tendon rupture, dynamic ultrasound shows the dilation of the stumps or the displacement of the end of the tendon from the attachment site during finger movements. The analysis of the image obtained during the ultrasound examination helps to make a decision about the choice of treatment method. Read more about finger injuries.

A crackling finger

As you bend your fingers, the tendons of the flexor muscles are held in place by straps. There are five strings within each of the II-V fingers, and three strings in the area of the thumb. Overloading the tendon of the finger flexing muscle can cause retinitis, fibrosis and thickening. As a result, it is difficult to slide the tendon lying under the cord. Symptoms of a snapping finger are loss of smooth flexion and extension of the finger with an audible click and pain as you overcome resistance.

The finger ultrasound examination shows inflammatory changes in the tendon sheath and thickening of the retina. In a dynamic ultrasound examination (while the finger is moving), the tendon movement is blocked under the strap.
